The importance of containerization for global
trade has recently been re-emphasized. As The
Economist put it, “Containers have been more
important for globalization than freer trade” (The
Economist, 2013). A new study Bernhofen et al.,
2013) covering the introduction of containerization
until 1990 concluded that containerization had a
stronger impact on driving globalization than trade
liberalization, especially for developed countries
and North–North trade. At the same time, the
study concluded that during the early stages of
containerization, for trade involving developing
economies the impact of the gradual goods boxing
process had been relatively small.
On a related matter, and recalling that container trade
remains largely serviced by regular liner shipping
services, it appears
