Haiyan Typhoon in the Philippines
NATURAL DISASTERS
Every year typhoons, hurricanes, floods hit the earth. The coasts of Central America and the coasts of Mexican Gulf greatly suffer from hurricanes every year. Floods hit Southeast Asia due to Monsoon rain. In 2013, a typhoon hit the Southeast Asia and the Philippines were the most adversely affected country by the typhoon called Haiyan, which is known as Yolanda in the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan, the most powerful typhoon ever, swept everything and everyone standing before it. The death toll of the typhoon was around 10.000. On account of the typhoon, the Philippines faced many problems. One of them was epidemics. Since fresh water resources mixed with sewage, many people, especially children, were in danger of such diseases as cholera and typhus. To protect these victims, many governments and non-profit organizations sent medical aid supplies to the Philippines. Secondly, many people became homeless because the waves and the wind caused by the Typhoon Haiyan destroyed every one of the houses and buildings, especially the ones which were close to the coast. Red Cross erected tents to give the homeless shelter. Thirdly, the farm lands, factories were destroyed by the typhoon and so were the crops and goods. The disaster cost economically the Philippines around 15bn$. To sum up, disasters do not only affect nature or human beings and although technology has advanced so much, humankind is still helpless to prevent natural catastrophes. I do not think disasters can be predicted or prevented in advance. Instead, we can only decrease the damage. Thus, countries must be united in such occasions. In the Philippines, as for me, governments did what they were supposed to do. They funded and sent food and medical aid. They showed their support. The spiritual support is also as important as financial support. I hope the Philippines will be fully recovered from this disaster soon.
