According to Diffusion of Innovations theory, the earliest adopters of a new technology, innovators, are often considered risk-takers who are not well integrated into a system. It is not clear if this is the case with social media. Although the innovators appear different from the early adopter or majority LHDs in ways consistent with Diffusion of Innovations theory (e.g., larger health departments with more resources), they also have a much greater number of followers and likes than the early adopter or majority group.
