Project by using two conditions to establish group norm.
There have been a negotiation between the agreed and the against people
in the Chao Phraya For All project. On the one hand, the agreed people have
said that this project will create a better landscape perspective and it will give
more accessibility to people who live nearby the Chao Phraya River also, it will
improve the area and environment there. On the other hand, the against state
that if this project is done, it will destroy the cultural of Thai people who live
nearby moreover, they have questioned that the project required a lot of costs,
will it truly be worthwhile?
How will the negotiation ends peacefully? The two conditions of
establishing group norms could be used to compromise the negotiation. Firstly,
the communication norm is communication patterns which are considered proper
and respectful. It is the possibility of monitoring other members to check up and
discover the acceptable behavior. In this circumstance, both of the people in
different sides should understand the information or the demand in each other
first, which I think that both of them have the same demand, which is to make
Bangkok a better society. Then, they have to have interdependent to
communicate with the others. This could be done by holding the conference so
that both of the group can have an opportunity to understand more about each
other’s reasons in different groups. But “Knowing what to say is never enough, it
is also necessary to know how to say it. (ELL 1994, 2835)”. They should know
how to communicate to avoid the problems or compromise with each other.
Moreover, they must respect each other’s opinion in order to find the answer or
solution that both of them are agreed.
The other condition is motivation norm, which individuals with similar
interests joining the group to acquire appropriate and just rewards. From my
point of view, although there are two groups of people, which are agreed and
against people, they still can integrated to be the same group, which is group of
Thai people. As I told that both of them have the same motivation, which is to
make Bangkok a better society, but how they will meet the satisfaction is different
as there were both pros and cons in this project and different group did not think
the same. Hence, they have to be interdependence and set their goal together
then try to find the way that both of them are agreed to satisfy that goal. Also,
they have to pay respect to each other in order to acquire their rewards together.
