Another reason for the growth of government is the public's acceptance of business regulation. Even though politicians still like to talk about the free-market economy, the United States has moved away from it to a regulated, or mixed, economy. Nowhere does the Constitution mention the power to prevent monopolies, ensure a cleaner environment, provide for safe food and drugs, or require limits on child labor, but all of these policies are infect, to varying degrees, today. They resulted not only from legislation but also from the Supreme Court's expansive interpretations of the Commerce Clause and the Necessary and Proper Clause of the Constitution.
