Introduction
The first wooden material composed of particles dates backto 1887, where sawdust bonded with a blood-albumin adhesivewere pressed to a “Holzmasseplatte” (Hubbard, 1887). The initialpurpose was to utilize waste chips, sawdust or waste-wood, as reg-ularly obtained from sawmills. Since the first particleboard factorystarted to operate in Germany in the year 1941, particleboards arestill holding the strongest position on the European wood-basedpanel market. Particleboards are produced at an annual volumeof 28.4 million m3(EPF, 2014), which represents over 60% of theentire European wood-based panels production (Eastin et al., 2012).
