1 In 2002 Grant Dickinson was working on a fishing boat off Queensland, Australia. During a storm, the boat sank. Grant cut himself and was left bleeding in the water while he waited to be rescued. One shark came closer and closer. Grant was very afraid. He thought that the shark would soon attack and eat him. Suddenly, a group of dolphins appeared. They swam in a circle around him and chased the sharks away. The dolphins stayed with Grant until another boat came and rescued him a few hours later.
2 Dolphins are clever and friendly animals. People love watching them play their games. But dolphins are also famous for saving people from sharks. Nobody knows why they do this, But scientists have noticed that dolphins protect their babies by swimming around them in the circle. Perhaps dolphins think that people are like their own babies!
3 Another person who was saved by dolphins is Martin Richardson. When he was swimming in the sea near Egypt, he was attacked by a shark. The shark bit him, then swam away. But it soon came back, three dolphins chased it away. The dolphins then waited with Martin until he was rescued by friends.
4 Grant and Martin don’t know why the dolphins saved them. They are just happy to be alive!
