Implications
Research and Practice
The discipline of nursing needs to engage in further
research on innovation because inquiry for innovation
is based on context. Specifically, individual commitment
and motivation, the influence of the wider
organization, and human resources considerations
contribute to an environment of innovativeness.
Nursing leadership needs to recognize that the human
capacity to innovate is based on workers’ perceived
identification, support, nurse-to-nurse relationships,
and nurse-to-nurse leader relationships in the organizational
context. Leadership style and leadership
competency are critical elements to ensure a climate
and culture for innovativeness. Future research should
develop a scale to quantify innovativeness. Nursing
education should consider leadership development and
curriculum to support innovativeness. Lastly, practice
should ensure that nurse leaders are engaged in actions
to enable innovativeness at the unit level, interdepartmental
level, and system level (Figure 2).
