The only significant difference between the two student groups involved responses to the statement ‘smoking a few cigarettes every now and then has only benefits and does no harm’. On average, medical students were less inclined to agree with it (24.8% versus 29.6%, p < 0.05). When groups were broken down into smokers and non-smokers, a lower percentage of medi- cal students than non-medical students agreed with this statement, but differences between subgroups (smokers and non-smokers) did not reach statistical significance (Table 2, row 3). Occasional smokers were more likely to disagree with this statement than daily smokers (26.8% versus 17.8%, p < 0.05), with no significant interaction with the student group.
