The Worst Holiday I Ever Went On!
It all started when my parents surprised me by saying; we’re going on holiday to America! I was so excited about going I told everybody I knew. Of course they all told me to get them presents. Heh, should have seen that one coming. Four days later we were checking in at the airport, ready to go.
At the airport we faced the usual delays, but two hours later we were on our way. When we got to America we went to our hotel to check in, it was too late to do anything else so we all went to bed in our luxury room.
The next morning we had breakfast in the hotel and then went to explore ‘The Big Apple’. We went shopping where I had to get presents for all the people who had asked me. After that we had a meal in a fancy restaurant. After we paid the bill and left, we went to the Empire State Building. It was amazing! We were able to see for miles and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. The tour guide told us that we had the perfect weather for seeing New York. We made another quick round of the shops where I bought more presents, the most of which were chocolate bars and key rings because these were the only things I could afford having to buy so many presents, and then back to the hotel for dinner. After dinner I went up to the room to watch television, that’s when I saw it, there was a hurricane tearing across America and was headed for New York. I sat there gazing at the T.V. not believing what I was hearing; the hurricane was an F5, which was a very, very strong hurricane. I ran down six floors, not having the patience to wait for the elevator. By the time I reached my parents I was out of breath and not able to tell them what I had heard, but they could tell there was something wrong. When I finally got my breath back all I could do was whisper; we’re in trouble. They asked; why? But I cold only point to the elevator. We went back to our room and they watch open mouthed at the television. Then they said; pack up we’re flying home tonight. Almost like an omen the TV reporter said; all flights have been cancelled until the hurricane has passed. We all just sat there and without saying anything I went to bed.
When I woke up the hotel was a panic. I could hear people running and shouting. I was wondering why when I remembered the hurricane. I jumped out of bed and woke my parents, then they jumped out of bed. My Mam made a couple of phone calls. She stood up with a sad face and said; come on we’re going to find a shelter, grab whatever you need, not too much though. We soon found one around the corner. We paid $100 and went in. Then all we could do was wait. The sky that had been so clear yesterday was turning darker every minute. A noise of crunching metal and the doors were closed, locked and bolted. Suddenly we felt the ground above us shudder and crack, then huge structures came crashing down, we felt them splinter into smaller pieces. Then everything went still. We could hear the hurricane but it was further away now. We had survived! The doors were opened and light came flooding into the room. Everybody cheered and ran outside. The New York skyline had been destroyed. Some buildings lay on their sides. Others which had been ripped up by their foundations were nowhere in sight. We survived the next few days on the chocolate bars I had bought. We rationed them over the next three days. On the fourth just as we were certain we were going to die, a rescue helicopter came. We were airlifted first because I was a child. We were met by all my family and friends when we got home, they had thought we were still stranded or worse, dead! My best friend said that he had known I would get through it.
That holiday changed my life. I now realise how dangerous nature can be and always tell people where I am going even if it is only to the local shops.
