Antiviral medicatios partially control signs and ssymptoms when used as daily suppression therapy in selected populations (symptom 6 per year). The suppressive therapy ameliorates or even prevents recurrence more than 75 of those infected with HSV (CDC, 1998). The safety of oral acyclovir is established with up to 6 years of continuous use. Suppreeion with valacyclovir and famciclovir are considered safe for up to one year. The long-term use of these medications has not been implicated in the development of resistance in the immuocompetent (CDC) . In the immuocompromised, suppression of HSV with continuous therapy reduces the recurrence and subclinical shedding of the virus, but often requires larger dose with attendant side effects and the development of resistance (CDC, 1998).
