This is an unattainable ideal, but it points the way to the main tasks of a discussion leader. No human group is ever completely free from tension, but the leader has to try to keep the emotional tone as relaxed and permissive as possible. And secondly, because people tend to wander from the subject, to be unintelligible to others, to talk too much or too little etc, he has to try develop good discussion behavior in the members. Teachers have to recognize that in some adult classes the discussion will begin by being a long way from the ideal, and that even in classes which have reached a good standard of discussion there is always the danger of a class meeting in which almost everything can go wrong.
