We decided to finally give this place a visit. My daughters music teacher's husband used to work here before and that's how we found out about this store. She had an issue with her alto sax with one of the keys sticking and asked if someone would be able to look at what's wrong with the instrument. That's where we met Vern. He's an older guy but you can tell he has extensive repair knowledge and experience and is a master of fixing and maintaining instruments. We were led upstairs to the repair shop and it was a real repair shop with tools all over the place. When we mentioned about my daughter's teachers husband, Vern was ecstatic to hear this and mentioned he was a very good friend of his. Very carefully meticulously spent some time examining the problem under a lighted microscope and repaired the problem. He advised us that due to the wear and tear on the instrument, we were in for a major repair soon. When all was said and done, I was surprised as he didn't charge us at all for his time and services. What a really nice person.
On a side note, my daughter replaced her souvenir ukulele that I bought her during our very first visit to the islands. The English guy (that looks like Gene Wilder) with the long hair was very friendly. He showed us the store's inventory of Kala Uke's. He even played a little for us to hear us the nice sound quality. He also played a little electric guitar for my son as well. Now my son is interested in learning how to play too.
We enjoyed our experience here and I'm glad that I was able to bring my kids to a real music store with people that understood their craft. You kids will be fascinated to see all the instruments about, especially the rows of guitars hanging for all to see.
