The petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries are among the noteworthy customers of the Port of Hamburg. About 12 million metric tons of unpackaged liquid bulk cargo and general cargo of all classes of dangerous materials are shipped via Hamburg in adherence to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG).
Numerous companies in the Port of Hamburg provide special warehouses and tanks conforming to the newest safety regulations for dangerous goods.
Wallmann’s Multipurpose Terminal, for instance, provides special storage for hazardous goods. The warehouse is specially built to retain water in case of fire fighting and is equipped with all technical safety measures.
Additionally, the HHLA Frucht- und Kühlzentrum (FKZ) is known for its safe, controlled storage of pyrotechnics. It has space for more than 10,000 pallets of class 1.4 hazardous goods; furthermore, packing, storage and commissioning services are available for containers filled with fireworks.
Another terminal specialised in dangerous cargo is Buss Logistics Terminal in Hamburg-Steinwerder, one of the largest independent logistics centres for chemicals and hazardous goods. Buss Safelox provides warehousing and logistics services for businesses with particularly high requirements on safety and quality, such as the chemical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.
