Each quality function incorporates a wide range of tools, techniques and methods which have been developed and deployed over the last several decades to manage quality across sectors. It is important to make a clear distinction between different quality functions, as they are often mixed up in the QM literature, creating confusion for practitioners as well as researchers. Each quality function has a specific role and objective which needs a dedicated effort and investment by the user. For instance, Quality Improvement (QI) (e.g. lean) helps companies to improve current business processes whereas Quality Assurance (QA) (e.g. HACCP, ISO) satisfies regulatory requirements and improves food quality safety. However, these quality functions are often clustered together with a one-size-fits-all approach.
