Task 12: Perimeter and area (rectangle, parallelogram/triangle)
In Tasks 12, the subject, was given a hypothetical teaching situation where he was required to respond to a student's request for help with a problem. The task required the subject to help his student to calculate the perimeter and area of the given diagram (Diagram 1) involving a composite figure, a combination of rectangle and parallelogram/triangle.
This task allows the researcher to examine the subject's procedural knowledge by determining what formula he used, and also to explore his understanding of the formula which would contribute to the conceptual knowledge. In Task 12, the subject will need to use Pythagoras' Theorem to find the length of TR. Therefore, Task 12 also provided the opportunity to assess the subject's SMK of Pythagoras' Theorem. This theorem is frequently used in solving some of the exercises or problems of perimeter and area.
