A resistant (Suweon 365) and a susceptible (Chucheongbyeo)
variety to blast isolate KI-313 were chosen
as parents for this study. Suweon 365 has a single
dominant gene conferring resistance to blast isolate
KI-313 (Kim et al., 1995). Both parents are japonica
rices. A segregating F2 population consisting of
69 plants was generated using Suweon 365 as the female
parent. Four of Kiyosawa’s differential varieties
(Kiyosawa et al., 1981), Shin 2, Fujisaka 5, Tsuyuake
and Kusabue were tested against the KI-313 isolate.
Shin 2 and Fujisaka 5 having Pi-ks were susceptible
and Tsuyuake having Pi-km and Kusabue containing
Pi-k were resistant to the KI-313 isolate. Two additional
F2 populations derived from crosses between
Suweon 365 and Tsuyuake and Kusabue were used to
test for allelism between Pi-k and the resistance gene
of Suweon 365.
