Drawing from all of these traditions, the focus in this paper is on a set of scales
developed by Wolters (1998; 1999b; Wolters & Rosenthal, 2000) that can be used to assess
seven regulation of motivation strategies. These scales include strategies based on selfconsequating,
environmental structuring, mastery self-talk, performance or extrinsic self-talk,
relative ability self-talk, situational interest enhancement, and interest enhancement based on
relevance or personal interest. Although this collection does not include all possible regulation
of motivation strategies, it does represent a cross-section of the ways in which students attempt
to manage their motivation or motivational processing (Wolters, in press).
