Passage 2 (Unseen)
For almost eight years, Sara Roberts worked as a store assistant in a children’s clothing store. She was bored and badly paid but, worst of all, the products in the store were so unattractive and badly made that she felt ashamed to be selling them.
One evening she was discussing work with a friend. She told her how unhappy she was, and how she often thought she could design much better children’s clothes herself. Her friend just looked at her and said, “Why don’t you, then?”
First, Sara discussed the idea with her family. Her father had been in business and gave her a lot of useful advice about how to research the market and create a business plan. “If I hadn’t had their support, I don’t think I could have done it,” she said.
Her first big decision was whether to open a store or to sell the clothes online. After considering both options carefully, she decided that an online business would be best. She had a logo designed, and got the website created by a well-known company.
“I knew that it was important for it to work well and look professional,” she explained.
In the early months, she used to spend all day in meetings and half the night working on new designs for her clothes. It was an anxious time, and sometimes she wondered if it had all been a mistake.
However, when a photograph showing the son of a famous singer wearing Sara’s clothes appeared in a popular magazine, her website received thousands of hits, and that was the start of the success she enjoys today.
So, does she have any regrets?
“I just wish I’d done it sooner, that’s all!” she smiled.
