This book is divided into 4 main sections, the first of which covers general principles of viral infections of the nervous system including historical background, viruses and virus-cell interactions, pathogenesis of central nervous system infections, and immune responses. Part 2 addresses acute neurological diseases, with chapters on meningitis, encephalitis and poliomyelitis, herpesvirus infections, rabies, postinfectious demyelinating diseases, and other postviral syndromes. Chronic neurological diseases are discussed in the third section, including chronic inflammatory and demyelinating diseases, retroviruses, human immunodeficiency virus, viral infections of the developing nervous system, and degenerative diseases and prions. The final part of the book considers other perspectives such as cerebral tumours, other sites of neurological infection, prevention and therapy, and emerging viral infections
