As with all pregnant women, the views, beliefs and values of
the woman, her partner and her family in relation to her care and
that of her baby should be sought and respected at all times.
Teenagers should have the opportunity to make informed decisions
about their care and treatment, in partnership with their
healthcare professionals. It is impossible to deliver antenatal care
to pregnant teenagers if they do not access and subsequently
engage with antenatal services. Working with a teenage population
can be challenging and requires a ‘young thinking’
approach and an ability to reach and communicate with young
people and adolescents at their level whilst encouraging them to
take responsibility for their antenatal care.
