The experiment is set up at Calicut (110 15’ -750 47’) a coastal city in northern part of Kerala, India, with a warm humid climate. Kitchen waste from 200 households on an average ranging from 100-120 kg/day(density between 350-480 kg/m3) is dumped in a site identified within a neighbourhood in beds/pits on a regular basis. An area of approximately 48m2 within a neighbourhood was selected for this purpose. It was divided into 8 pits of size 1.2mx1.2m along with area for maintenance. Pits were numbered in sequence. Among these, the first four pits (pit 1, 2, 3 and 4) were of 30cm deep and other rest four (pit 5, 6, 7 and 8) were 60cm deep. Depths more than 60cm were not taken for the ease of turning and maintenance.
