Do not attach switches to fixtures that are wired as emergency fixtures. It is common practice to use a fraction of the conventional fixtures for emergency lighting. You can identify emergency fixtures by turning off all the light switches and observing which fixtures keep operating.
(If you observe that a lot of wattage is being wasted by using large fixtures for emergency lighting, change the emergency lighting as recommended by Measure 9.6.3.)
Overall Space Lighting Override
In retrofits, retain the original switches to provide a quick means of turning off all lights when the space is unoccupied. Typically, the pullcord switches are used by regular occupants for their own work areas, while the original switches are used by security personnel or others to turn off all the lights at the end of the day. Install a large placard at the original switches that explains how the lighting in the space is controlled.
In new construction, design efficient transit light to get occupants from the entrances to their activity areas.
