SCRAP GRADES CHARGEABLE
There are no limits or restrictions on the quality of scrap
chargeable, and providing the scrap dimensions are less
than ‘d’ shown in Figure 5, ‘d’ being the distance between
the conveyor edge and the electrodes.
If a piece longer than ‘d’ is charged on the conveyor, when
it arrives at the end of the connecting car it could touch
the electrode before falling into the hot heel, causing an
undesirable electrical bridge. Having said that, even for
the smallest Consteel® in operation, commercial scrap has
a maximum dimension smaller than ‘d’, so all scrap on the
market is suitable.
Thanks to its large hot heel, Consteel® melts larger
pieces of scrap more easily than conventional EAFs of the
same size. The right use of the hot heel, combined with
good inert gas bottom stirring, is one of the keys to the
performance of Consteel® plants.
