Toner et al. compared the SDS with the depression section of the abbreviated Comprehensive Assessment and Referral Evaluation (Short-CARE) and to physicians’ ratings for a sample of 80 elderly outpatients. Only 65% of patients completed enough of the SDS to permit scoring. The Short-CARE agreed more closely (kappa = 0.46) with the physician’s rating of depression than did the SDS (kappa = 0.29) (9, p138).
