Abstract : Background : Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is an acquired syndrome characterized by systemic activation of blood coagulation leading to widespread deposition of fibrin in the microcirculation and can contribute to multiple organ failure. Depletion of platelets and coagulation factors in blood may cause bleeding. Patients with DIC are at high risk for mortality. Objectives : To study the overall survival and mortality rate of DIC patients and to analyze factors that were related to the overall survival and mortality of these patients. Method : Between January 2001 and December 2008, all adult patients admitted to Ramathibodi Hospital who were diagnosed with DIC were analyzed. The diagnosis of DIC was made according to the criteria proposed in 2001 by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
