List of Symbols
The Native American Indians used many symbols to convey secret and mysterious signs on their bodies, clothes, homes and weapons. Our illustrated list of symbols show that their designs were usually based on geometric portrayals of celestial bodies, natural phenomena and animal designs. The list of symbols show that signs and colors were used for a variety of different reasons and were on depicted on numerous objects and articles used by Native Americans. War paint and different types of body decoration including tattoos, used by Indian warriors contained secret symbols and signs - even horses were painted with symbols. Many items in the list of symbols were spiritual in nature conveying Native American religious beliefs. Others in the list of symbols conveyed immediately identifiable secret messages to other tribe members and identified specific clans. Some Native American symbols were specific to individual families and passed down from one generation to another. Other items in the list of symbols had a practical purpose such as providing directions, indicating good hunting or areas to be used for a specific purpose.
