Today: Buddhism comes to China. Human Nature and Destiny from the
Buddhist Perspective. October 22, 2015
• We have seen that Confucianism put the family atthe center of society. Public life and the state
were seen as expansions of the basic familystructure.
• Filial piety (revering one’s parents and ancestors) was important in Chinese society.
• Daoism was more oriented to observing nature and patterning society after natural processes.
• These were two distinct visions of human nature. Filial piety: showing reverence for parents.
In Daoism, learn from nature…
• So how could Buddhism, with its monastic tradition centered on monks, which entailed
removal from family and everyday society, find acceptance in Chinese society?
• One solution that early Chinese Buddhists propagated was to orient Chinese Buddhism towards the needs of the family.
• Thus one who gave alms (donations) to the monks and monastery could do so to make merit
(punya) for the sake of one’s ancestors. Making merit not only for oneself, but also for
the sake of one’s parents. Praying to the Buddha for the sake of for oneself
and family?
• In this way, Buddhist piety could maintain Chinese family structure.
• Also, Buddhism complemented rather than supplanted Confucianism and Daoism.
• The three religions were seen as having particular applications to different areas of
life.
Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism: three perspectives on pickles in a barrel.
A short video on Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism together.
• Confucian worship served family lineage and the state, and the social relationships that
were important in that tradition.
• Daoism was oriented to the more magical or esoteric aspects of life—finding ultimate
reality by retreating to nature, and also seeking magical elixirs (that is, alchemy) for
long life and prosperity.
• Buddhism, on the other hand, handled matters of death and the afterlife. By joining the sangha
(monkhood), one was also increasing merit for one’s parents and ancestors.
• The principle of karma entered into religious life as a way for ensuring a better life after death.
• We have seen that the ancient Chinese were already interested in lavish funerals to provide
the deceased with all the necessary comforts in the afterlife. A stripper hired for a funeral. Chinese think of practical , material aspects of the afterlife. Buddhism’s emphasis on improving one’s rebirth would have been of interest.
Another funeral…
• As far as the perception of human nature and human destiny goes, then, Buddhism introduced some novel ideas into East Asia, which became adapted to the cultural setting.
• We have seen that ancient Chinese philosophers debated whether people were basically good
(Confucius) or bad (Xunzi).
• These conceptions of human nature also envisioned the individual as a whole being, albeit composed of five different “elements” (wu xing = meaning five
elements) from nature (wood, fire, earth, metal, water). The five elements of the physical world.
• Different parts of the human body were seen as having special affinities for one or more of these
elements.
• For example, the liver and eyes were especially connected to wood, while fire was connected to
the tongue and heart.
• Further, each of the five elements was associated with a different stage of life: birth (wood) , youth (fire) , adulthood (earth), old age (metal) , and death (water). Chinese medicine. Different proportions of the fundamental elements made a medicine more
suitable for particular parts of the body.
• If someone was sick, medicine associated with one or another of the elements was applied to
affect the part of the body affected by the illness.
• In this Chinese conception of the world, everything had a correlate in the natural elements.
• Buddhism, however, proposed a different conception of human nature.
• As you may know, the Buddha in India (6 th century BCE) taught the Four Noble Truths:
• (1) Life ultimately entails suffering (or dissatisfaction).
• (2) We suffer because we crave what is pleasurable and seek to avoid what is painful, resulting in continual rebirth.
