In general, the elderly overestimate the various costs of exercise. Their health care professional should give a frank
estimate of the costs rather than ignore the subject. Also, some perceived costs, such as exertion or fatigue from the exercise program, may be reframed as positive outcomes, gains, or signs of success from the program. The psychologic costs of participation can be addressed through continued encouragement. The inclination to remain sedentary may be caused by lack of engaging in this appraisal at all.
