The self-referral format of the CBT-I workshop provides an acceptable route for accessing empirically supported psychological treatments for individuals experiencing insomnia, avoiding the need to consult with a GP. Workshops that do not carry a diagnostic label may be seen as less threatening, and a non mental healthcare setting may be seen as more acceptable. Anonymous feedback from participants indicated an extremely high level of satisfaction regarding both the format and content of the workshops. These workshops are run on a self-referral basis and do not employ an assessment process or inclusion criteria for participation . It is recognised that there are potential dangers in delivering CBT-I to an unscreened population. However, the workshops leaders are experienced clinical/counselling psychologists who receive regular supervision from a consultant psychologist. Furthermore, there is careful signposting at the follow-up stage, so that participants who still experience problems are referred on to the local psychological therepy service, which accepts self-referrals.
