According to Sobrados et al. (2008), to carry out the removal of
C. perfringens spores a “thermal shock” is required, which can be
achieved by thermophilic treatment followed by composting
process or thermal drying, and this treatment can also be effective
in the elimination of E. coli (Reinthaler et al., 2010). Other solutions
involving an increase of the residence time in the ATAD process, an
increase of the volume of the reactor, a reduction of the inflow to
the plant or apply a subsequent radiation treatment, which has
been proven effective against pathogen removal (Jianlong and
Jiazhuo, 2007).
