In January 2007, the Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT)
subregional cooperation initiative adopted a new Road Map to refocus its cooperation
initiatives over 2007-11. The IMT-GT Road Map, inter alia, identifies four economic
connectivity corridors as key to strengthening regional connectivity to support increased
intra- and extra-regional trade, investment and tourism. These are the (i) Extended
Songkhla-Penang-Medan Economic Corridor; (ii) Straits of Melaka Economic Corridor; (iii)
Banda Aceh-Medan-Pekanbaru-Palembang Economic Corridor; and (iv) Melaka-Dumai
Economic Corridor. The economic corridor approach has been identified as a core strategy
for accelerated development of IMT-GT, and development of these economic corridors was
declared a Flagship Project of IMT-GT at the 13th Ministerial Meeting of IMT-GT in Selangor
