3. Results
3.1. USGS database
Analysis of the 987 records from the USGS database, combined with extrapolated parameter data (depth, salinity, and temperature), resulted in a mean value of 26.5 °C for temperature with a maximum of 29.27 °C and a minimum of 12.47 °C at lionfish capture sights. The standard deviation for temperature was 2.48 °C. Mean salinity was determined to be 36.11‰ with a maximum value of 36.76‰ and a minimum value of 32.62‰ with a standard deviation of 0.56‰. Four depth records that were extreme outliers from extrapolated ETOPO data were excluded from analysis resulting in a mean depth of 35 m with a maximum of 610 m, minimum of 1 m, and standard deviation of 65 m. A largely right skewed distribution shows most captures took place in waters less than 35 m. Almost half of all lionfish captures were reported from the United States (30%) or the Bahamas (19%), with Honduras having the third highest percentage at 7%.
