With this rapid growth has come the need for more managers and more formal manage- ment systems. Armed with undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, Matt signed on at Fore to write long computer codes for the ATM soft ware. Although many of us wouldn't (and couldn't) find job satisfaction in writing computer code, Matt thrived on the challenge because it gave him "the cre- ative thrill of composing short stories with the mental challenge of solving a tough crossword puzzle. Fore Systems, like many computer software companies, offered a freewheeling, often unstructured, environ- ment where employees could take on extra tasks if they wanted to. And Matt did. He reorganized the computer lab, took over the ordering of equipment, and organized seminars in which the company's dis- parate teams could share and compare notes.
