Muffin came to us on St. Patrick's Day of 1997. She came to our back door and mewed. I wasn't sure if she was a stray or not because she was wearing a pink flea collar. About a month before, the other cats had spotted her outside, wandering around our yard. She was eating the remains of a bunny some dog or other animal had torn apart. I thought she belonged to someone at the time because she was wearing a collar.
After putting some food out for her and watching her gobble it down, it became clear that if she did have an owner, they weren't doing a very good job. We decided to let her stay in our unattached garage until we figured out what to do. Well, you probably know the rest of the story......
One day the stray kitty who lived in the garage got a name. Then came the calls and the posters to see if she had an owner. Then the trips to the vet. And the confirmation. The confirmation that the weight she was putting on was not just from being well fed. Then the birth of her six kittens on Mother's Day! (Actually, only five of them were born on Mother's Day. One was born thirty-six hours later. Talk about surprises!)
The time came to find homes for all the kittens. What a hard thing to do. Not so much finding good homes (although it was challenging). Giving them up. It was nothing less than sheer agony. I was so angry at the irresponsible person who had not had Muffin spayed! I gained a lot of courage from Muffin. As they went one by one, she let go. Her contribution had been made. So had ours.
After finding homes for all her kittens (and getting her spayed), Muffin became fully integrated into our household. For about a month there, it seemed like there would never be peace again. Till the three cats got everything worked out.
Now Muffin has a home. Her babies have homes. Whenever I raise my voice (which I frequently do, being the expressive person that I am) Muffin comes running and insists that I settle down. It's her gift to me. Seems like we've both made a difference in each other's life.
