The U.S. Small Business Administration estimates that new ventures close for every three that are opened.3 But what should be recognized is that these are not necessarily all failures. They are mixed and do not necessarily, nor accurately, portray an actual entrepreneurial failure. It is a conventional wisdom that at any one time there are three categories of new ventures. The first includes those that have a good chance to succeed. Given some luck and opportunity these will grow and thrive. The second group can be referred to as the “walking wounded” a bout to expire. It is just that the entrepreneur will not “let go” and let the operation die. The third group is already doomed to close.
