Encouraged by these results, we next focused on the reactions of aliphatic aldehydes with isatin as the same aldol acceptor for further application. To the best of our knowledge, one example has been reported for the aldol reaction between abranched aliphatic aldehydes and isatins in the presence of organocatalysts (up to 84% ee). The reaction of isobutyraldehyde 7awith isatin5b in the presence of 1awas examined under various conditions, and we found that malonic acid as an additive and dry EtOH as a solvent played an important role for high yields and enantioselectivities (Table 3).
