Jacqueline and Henri Boiffils (J+H Boiffils) designed the Siam Paragon สยามพารากอน shopping mall in Bangkok. It opened in 2005 at a cost of $450 million. It contains the largest aquarium in South East Asia, an opera house, an exhibition hall, and an art gallery.
The mall has all the flash of an upscale shopping venue, which attracts large crowds. Each venue takes on its own atmosphere, complete with color and form.
Boiffils says: “Of course, shopping meccas still have to sell goods and make money, but this is no longer enough. The shopping centre of today has a new vocation: a cultural obligation. That is why these shrines to consumerism are increasingly the preserve of renowned architects.”
