was determined by isocratic HPLC (Perkin-Elmer
Turbochrom LC Plus System, Shelton, CT, USA), using
a Spherisorb S5-CN Nitrile column (Waters, Milford,
MA, USA; length=250 mm; internal diameter 4.6 mm;
particle size 5 mm). All-E-astaxanthin (Hoffmann-La
Roche, Basel, Switzerland) was used as an external

standard (E1%, 1 cm=2100, lmax=470 nm; Britton,
1995). Concentrations were calculated based on
integrated chromatogram peak areas.
