Two research questions were posed asking about the impact of R4L on children’s reading
achievement and reading self-concept. The children reported having greater success in decoding new
words and the adult participants agreed that the children were better able to sound out new words as
evidenced in the following quotes:
I sound out the letters and do the work. I used to not sound them out. (Child)
He can break up the word and yes, try to break it up and read it from there and he’s trying, he’s learnt
to pick up in the sounds. (Parent)
