Increased competition has seen many organizations come up with strategies and schemes aimed at increasing
employee involvement in the organizational process. One of the schemes is empowerment which is seen as an
advanced manifestation of employee involvement with its advocates arguing that it is the answer to gaining
increased organizational commitment (Walton, 1985). Empowerment is the process of giving power to others and
for the servant leader it involves effective listening, making people feel significant, emphasizing teamwork and
valuing love and equality and it is a major factor in servant leadership and should be one of its primary focus
(Russell & Stone, 2002). Bass (1990) posits that empowerment is power sharing with followers in planning and
decision making.
