8.2. Emotional content analysis
The transcripts yielded 260 narratives relating to emotional content,
with roughly equal numbers from the two hospitals (117 &
143). The narratives were evenly spread between the two types of
Unit (134 [51%] NICU vs 126 [49%] PICU).
Each narrative was coded for primary content (medical influence,
communication, preparing for death or nurse support) and
primary focus (the family, the patient or the nurse); summary data
are provided at Table 1. Cross tabulation revealed no association
between: type of interview (Focus Group vs Individual) and primary
focus; type of ICU (NICU vs PICU) and primary focus; hospital
and primary focus, or, between type of ICU and primary content.
