Troy Bradley is from Albuquerque, New Mexico (in the U.S.), and Leonid Tiukhtyaev is from Moscow, Russia. Together, they formed the "Two Eagles" team. They landed 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) offshore of Mexico's Baja California. They were about 300 miles (483 kilometers) north of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Early plans called for a landing on a beach. But wind pushed the balloon parallel to the coast. This forced the pilots to drop their trailing ropes into the ocean. They had to slow the balloon for a controlled water landing.
