When knowledge of the client's culture is missing or inad-equate, it can contribute to negative situations such as clients' inadequate use of health resources. When nursing education fails to expose students to a variety of cultures, the students may have gaps in cultural knowledge on how to care for diverse groups. Although it is unrealistic to expect that nurses will have knowledge of all cultures, they should be aware of the impact of culture on behavior and know how to obtain cultural knowledge of cultural influences that affect groups with whom they most frequently interact (Figures 7-1 and 7-2). Clients provide a rich source of information about their own cultures.
