understanding of their situation and circumstances. The discussion demonstrated the complexity
of human behaviour, interaction of theories in explaining human behaviour and that social
workers could only succeed in alleviating human suffering by working in multi-disciplinary
teams which pooled expertise in problem solving through anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive
practices (Department of Children Schools and Families (DCSF), 2010, (5.3)). It was argued that
no single theory or practitioner could adequately address human problems alone. The following
specific theories were referred to: attachment, ecological, biological psychology (biopsychological).
Relevant legislation and statutory policies were cited wherever relevant. Theories
such as the ecological model were applied to both Sam and Jan because of its relevance to both.
Each theory was discussed and analysed critically focusing on the main tenets. Attachment theory
was discussed first with reference to Sam.
