Subject to the duration of starvation in the post-weaning period, the growth performance and the
immune defense of the piglets suffer to a different extent. Some data show that the growth rate
right after weaning has a significant impact on the pig performance in the growing and fattening
phases [58]. Although the pig has the ability for compensation, the bigger the stress the less the chance
is for recovery. This is certainly true for intensive genotypes. Therefore, any feeding strategy or feed
supplement that alleviates the reduction in growth rate post weaning may have a positive effect on the
efficiency of pork production.
