Boa Mistura, a Madrid-based artists collective, have proven that all you need to completely transform a town’s identity – is a lot of extremely colorful paint. Keep reading to see for yourself that you don’t need a lot of money to make a big difference in people’s lives.
Querétaro is a working class town that sits over a busy highway, which means it is seen by thousands of people each and every day. For the first part of the project, Boa Mistura targeted the section of the town that is most visible from the highway, painting over 30 buildings in the process. Most of the work was carried out by locals, which was an important step towards creating a stronger bond within the community.
“Witnessing the youth of the neighborhood sharing their time with others from social centers, when maybe there was never any excuse to meet each other,” a member of Boa Mistura explains in the video below. “They are thinking in a different way right now. [They] have a new reality, a modified one. That’s actually really good.”
This isn’t the first time Boa Mistura has taken on this kind of project, they have also traveled to Brazil and South Africa, where communities have been brought closer, all thanks to a simple coat of paint. Eventually, the collective plans to redecorate all 1,074 of Querétaro’s buildings, using vibrant colors to give children and adults alike, a renewed sense of pride in the place they call home.
