New Technology That Helps the Environment
In the modern way of living, technology offers both promise and peril. On the one hand, in the process of making electronic gadgets, manufacturers consume non-renewable resources. “Techno trash” is dumped, displacing wildlife and polluting oceans. And then there’s noise and air pollution.
At the same time, technology brings possibilities for a happy ending. The digital age is also a positive force for Mother Earth. In fact, new technology will play a huge role in improving the health of our planet in the years ahead.
That’s in part due to a shift in thinking by environmentalists in recent years. Once known for being at odds with technology, many are now embracing: ecological modernism” — a theory that “only technology can save nature,” professor Martin Lewis of Stanford University told The Guardian.
This mentality has even been embraced by the veterans of the field, such as 80-year-old Jane Good all, the famed anthropologist known for her work with wildlife in Africa. “I believe strongly that [technology] can — and must — be used as a force for advancing the work of environmental conservation,” Good all wrote this past spring.
