These results suggest that the erosive consequences of the events of low and intermediate intensity rainfall in the study area could be controlled if the farmers use traditional tillage methods, especially if this and other management practices are carried out parallel to contour lines. We also recommend that vines be planted following the traditional “marco real” system in order to create a dense vegetation cover. In the “marco real” tillage system that was abandoned in the 1970s, the distance between the vine rows was 1.5 m and the density of plantation was 3500 plants ha−1. This type of plantation allowed appropriate binding of soil by the roots and guaranteed a good cover of vegetation. Lasanta and Sobrón (1988) in experimental plots on vineyards cultivated with different techniques verified that soil losses were 18 times higher on plots cultivated by the current tillage systems than on those with traditional management.
