To avoid paying a steep offered by unscrupulous songthaew drivers and touts, head to Chang Pauk gate. Immediately across the street from the gate on the exterior side of the moat is a queue of songthaews ready to make the ascent up the windy road to Chiang Mai’s most famous temple. You may have to wait for other travelers to fill the back of the truck until the driver feels like it’s worth it to make the trip. In my case, I made the 4th traveler and managed a rate of 50 baht up and down for a round trip total of 100 baht. This was considerably less than what I would have paid even if I was able to negotiate to a lower price with the first driver.
